Podcast – Let’s Talk Nautical Ep.2: Being Prepared for the Unexpected

In our second episode of the “Let’s Talk Nautical” podcast, we talk about the importance of commitment to excellence and what it means to be skillful when facing a novel situation.

Episode 2: Being Prepared for the Unexpected

On January 15, 2009, US Airways Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger became an overnight hero when he and his crew safely ditched a commercial airliner in the Hudson River’s freezing waters after an unlucky encounter with a flock of geese.

On the evening of February 1, 2013, a severe leakage occurred in the container ship EMMA MÆRSK while the ship, loaded with general cargo in about 14,000 containers, was about to pass southbound through the Suez Canal. Despite the breakdown of the structural barriers, the crew managed to contain the emergency and bring the ship alongside at the Suez Canal Container Terminal without any personal injury or pollution to the environment.

Our second episode focuses on topics such as:
  • What it means to be skillful when you face a novel situation
  • The importance of commitment to excellence onboard
  • Skills needed to cope under pressure
